Joran Van der Sloot to fight extradition to US

Joran Van der Sloot is alleged to have played a role in the disappearance of American Natalie Holloway on Aruba seven years ago. Joran Van der Sloot is currently in a Peruvian prison after confessing to killing a Lima woman in 2010.

Confessed murderer Joran Van?der?Sloot told a judge on Tuesday that he will fight extradition from Peru to the United States, where he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, his lawyer said.

Van?der?Sloot remains the prime suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of Holloway in Aruba. He faces an indictment in the U.S. for allegedly accepting $25,000 in early 2010 in exchange for an unfulfilled promise to lead her mother’s lawyer to the body.

Judge Zenaida Vilca informed Van?der?Sloot of the U.S. extradition request during a closed door meeting at Piedras Gordas prison just north of Lima. The 24-year-old Dutchman told the judge he would fight extradition, his lawyer, Maximo Altez, said.

If he stays put, Van?der?Sloot could be released on parole after serving a third of his 28-year sentence for killing a Lima woman he met at a casino in May 2010, said Altez.

But if he were convicted in the U.S. he likely wouldn’t qualify for early parole in Peru. Under the U.S.-Peru extradition treaty he would be returned to Peru to finish out his sentence. Then, if he were convicted in the U.S., he would be sent there serve the second sentence.

“It’s not good for us if Van?der?Sloot goes to the United States because everyone hates him there and the members of the jury will thus be biased,” said Altez. “We will defend ourselves with all the legal remedies possible.”

Reporters were able to see Van?der?Sloot, from about 75 feet (25 meters), enter a room for the hearing, which was also attended by representatives of the U.S. and Dutch embassies.

The Dutchman smiled at the agents who accompanied him but did not respond to calls from the news media.

If Peru’s Supreme Court approves the extradition request it will then need to be approved by the country’s council of ministers.

Van?der?Sloot was sentenced in January after confessing to beating and strangling 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room five years to the day after Holloway disappeared on Aruba, the Dutch dependency where he grew up.

Utility SSE gets profit boost from renewable energy

LONDON (Reuters) – SSE (SSE.L), one of Britain’s biggest energy suppliers, reported a 2 percent rise in full-year profit on Wednesday, supported by higher renewable energy output which helped offset a drop in customer numbers and lower energy demand.

SSE, based in Perth, Scotland said operating profit at its wholesale business unit – which includes the production, storage and generation of energy – was up 6.4 percent, helped primarily by higher output of renewables from hydro and wind power.

Total electricity output from all renewable resources rose 73 percent during the year, reflecting extra generation capacity coming into operation and favourable weather conditions.

But profits fell 20 percent at the company’s retail business, which supplies electricity and gas to households and businesses, due to a dip in customer numbers as well as lower average consumption.

“Higher wholesale gas prices, falling demand for energy and a succession of winter storms presented major challenges for the wholesale, retail and networks parts of SSE,” the company said. It said the economic outlook for the UK and Ireland in 2012/13 remained uncertain.

Earlier this month, British Gas owner Centrica (CNA.L) and E.ON (EONGn.DE) had also warned of rising wholesale prices.

SSE said total energy customer accounts fell by 100,000 during last year to 9.55 million. Average gas use was down 19.9 percent, while electricity consumption dropped 6.9 percent.

The company said the rise in wholesale gas prices hurt spark spreads – the difference between the cost of gas and the price of electricity produced from it – which averaged less than 1 pound/megawatt hour over the year.

“Management are not shy in acknowledging that tough trading conditions persist in the wholesale and retail energy markets,” Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Fraser McLaren said.

The analyst said the profitability of most divisions could be relatively flat in 2012/13, as depressed spark spreads could fully erode incremental earnings from new wind capacity.

SSE delivered about 570 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy capacity this year. Analysts at Credit Suisse said another 500 MW of wind capacity should come online in 2013, as well as the impact of the additions this year.

“Given the ?step-up’ in new assets this year, we expect a 5 percent increase in adjusted pretax profit, the highest growth since 2008,” the Credit Suisse analysts said.

The utility’s adjusted profit for the year ended March 2012 came in at 1.34 billion pounds, in line with estimates according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll.

SSE is currently expected to report 2012/13 pretax profit of about 1.44 billion pounds, up 7.5 percent from this year’s levels, according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll.

Its shares were up 0.50 percent at 1,331 pence by 09:45 a.m.

A New York Times/CBS News poll released Monday night shows the possible political perils of President Obama’s recent announcement that he supports same-sex marriage.

Most of those polled say the president’s position will not impact how they vote. But among those who say it will influence their choice, 26 percent said they are less likely to vote for Obama as a result, while 16 percent say they are more likely to.

And in what is expected to be a tight race, “even a small shift in swing states could be costly,” says the Times.

Also troubling for the president is that a majority of voters suspect that his decision was politically motivated.

Sixty-seven percent said they thought Obama’s announcement was made “mostly for political reasons,” while 24 percent said it was “mostly because he thinks it is right.”

In another potentially damaging sign, 70 percent of Independents attribute the president’s move to politics, along with nearly half of Democrats.

Overall, Romney now has a three-point edge over Obama ? a lead that is within the poll’s margin of error ? despite improving views of the economy. The Times/CBS poll had the race dead even a month ago. Romney now leads Obama among Independents, and has a 1-point advantage (again within the margin of error) among women.

The economy remains by far the most important issue to voters, with 62 percent naming it their top concern, followed by the budget deficit at 11 percent and health care at 9 percent. Just 7 percent pick same-sex marriage as the most important issue in the election.

The controversial issue also carries risks for Romney. A “well-known, openly gay” Romney supporter withdrew his backing for the former Massachusetts governor on Monday, citing his stance on same-sex marriage.

“You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history and I do not support your run for president any longer,” wrote Bill White, the chairman and CEO of a New York-based consulting firm, in a letter obtained by CNN.

But if you go it alone, these kinds of classes are a great way to meet other moms-to-be. You also don?t have to limit your workout partners to other expectant friends. Set up a regular time each week to meet up with a girlfriend to exercise or even take a walk.

In addition to helping me stay in shape before and after my pregnancy, Stroller Strides allowed me to meet other moms and moms-to-be, which created a great support system and sounding board for all of my questions as I began my new role as mom.? Skip the gym.?If you find it hard to motivate yourself to go to your local fitness center, invest in a couple of prenatal workout videos that you can do in the comfort of your home. My series of DVD?s,?Knocked-Up Fitness, include routines from 8 to 20 minutes that are designed with modifications to fit your energy level every day.

Record everything.?The best way to stick to your fitness and nutrition goals is to write it all down. I?m loving the new?mama2b by Fitlosophy book. It?s a great way to keep track of your eating and exercise during your entire pregnancy. It also doubles as a pregnancy journal, which could lead to cute anecdotes you?ll read later on.

Focus on your core.?Always try to use your deep core muscles, this can help ease potential pregnancy back aches and can lead to an easier delivery. Pilates is a great way to target these important muscles without a lot of discomfort.

Note: Avoid traditional crunches as this could lead to increased abdominal separation. Also, running can be okay, but only if your doctor approves and it feels good to you. Otherwise, stick to low impact cardio, elliptical and the treadmill.

Take it easy.?Be sure to always keep water nearby and drink plenty. As your pregnancy progresses, it?s normal to feel your workouts getting harder, so listen to your body and don?t overdue it. If you can?t carry on a conversation with the person next to you, then definitely slow down.

Also, as your belly grows you may find that using a support belt can help ease low-back pain, making it easier for you to continue getting your workouts in. And make sure to wear supportive and comfy sneakers when walking or working out.

HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One

Designed primarily for home use, without office-centric features like faxing or an automatic document feeder, the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One ($129.99 direct) is a different kind of multifunction printer. On the one hand it offers a low-end set of features in many ways. Its paper capacity is a meager 80 sheets for example. On the other hand, it offers a slew of features? from Wi-Fi to direct printing from iOS and Android devices? that are anything but low end. The result is a printer that’s basic in some ways, highly sophisticated in others, and well worth considering for home use or for the dual role of home and light-duty home office printer.

The 5520 seems inspired by the same underlying design philosophy as the office-centric HP Officejet 6600 e-All-in-One ($149.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed. This is certainly true to the extent that both take a pass on a lot of common extras like an Ethernet connector while offering lots of less common extras. For example, both use touch screens for their front panel controls, with well designed menus that make them easy to use. More significantly, both offer a collection of features that earn them HP’s designation of e-All-in-One.

For the 5520, being an e-All-in-One means that it supports HP ePrint (HP’s approach to printing through the cloud), HP Web apps (a collection of apps available through the Web), Apple AirPrint (for printing from iOS devices), and the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app (for printing from both Android and iOS devices).

Note that to take advantage of ePrint, AirPrint, or HP’s Web apps, it’s not enough for the printer to be connected by a USB cable to a computer that’s on a network. The printer itself has to be connected to a network by WiFi. And for ePrint and Web apps, the network has to be connected to the internet. However, the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app can connect to the printer directly, whether you have a WiFi network or not.

Basics
The 5520′s basic MFP features are limited to printing, scanning, and copying. It can also print from or scan to memory cards, but it lacks a USB type A port for printing from PictBridge cameras or for printing from and scanning to USB keys. Like many home-oriented printers, however, it includes built-in templates you can print from commands in the front-panel menu system, including choices for notebook paper, graph paper, music paper, and games, with unlimited variations on mazes and Sudoku puzzles generated by built-in algorithms.

The paper capacity is limited to just 80 sheets, but the printer also includes automatic duplexing (for printing on both sides of the page), which is a welcome option for saving paper. One benefit of a low paper capacity is that the printer doesn’t have to be very large. With the trays fully extended, the 5520 measures 16.3 by 17.5 by 22.6 inches (HWD), but the printer body is only about 12 inches deep. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding room for it on your desk.

Setup, Speed and Output Quality

Setting up the 5520 is standard fare. For my tests, I connected it by USB cable and installed the drivers and software on a system running Windows Vista.

On our business applications suite, (timed with QualityLogic’s hardware and software), the printer came in at a reasonably fast 3.7 pages per minute (ppm). That’s a bit slower than the less expensive Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars), but MFC-J430w’s fast speed is one of the reasons why it’s an Editors’ Choice. To put both speeds in context, note that the somewhat more expensive Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-J825DW ($150 street, 4 stars) scored 4 ppm. Also, note that the 5520 scored well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4-by-6 photo.

Much like its speed, the 5520′s output quality overall is reasonably good, but not impressive. Text quality is a step above par for an inkjet, but it’s balanced by graphics quality that’s a step below par. Photo quality is dead on par.

Text is easily good enough for home use or most business use. I wouldn’t use it for a resume or other output that needs to look fully professional, but some fonts qualify as highly readable even at sizes as small as 4 points. Graphics are also high enough quality for most business needs, but I saw subtle banding and occasional streaks of white in solid areas in my tests. Color photos are a match for what you can expect from drugstore prints. However, images with dark areas aren’t as contrasty as they should be, and a black and white photo in my test showed different color tints at different shades of gray.

I’d like this printer better if it included an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn’t be forced to have Wi-Fi to use most of the features that make it an e-All-in-One. If you already have a Wi-Fi network, however, don’t mind setting one up to take full advantage of the printer, or don’t have any need of the Internet or Wi-Fi based features, that’s not an issue. In any of these scenarios, if you need a printer at home with reasonably fast speed and suitably high-quality output, the HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One is a more than reasonable choice.
